What is an Outpost?

Its mission is to create jobs for returning veterans; teach students at universities and schools about science, technology, engineering and math; help the military and foreign governments provide resources to people around the world; and help communities across the U.S. that lack access to local fruits and vegetables.

The Helical Outpost™ was inspired by the experiences of our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan witnessing the need for basic resources like food, water, electricity and communications.vets-teaching-kids-helical-outpost_600x400

There are currently two Outposts up and running in the U.S. in Virginia and Louisiana. Both of these Outposts are training hubs for veterans to learn how the Helical Outpost™ operates and as a source for fresh local produce.

 The Helical Outpost™ utilizes hydroponics, cultivating plants in water, rather than in soil. The recirculating hydroponic systems conserve, reuse and re-circulate water and minerals. For many high volume consumable crops, these systems are by far the most efficient method of plant cultivation in the world.

The Helical Outpost™ uses:

   80% less water compared to traditional agricultural methods

   A small fraction of the minerals compared to traditional farming methods

   Uses 90% less space compared to traditional agricultural methods

The Helical Outpost™ creates:

  More than 10 times the produce compared to other agricultural methods

  Up to 2,300 crop units per week

  Up to 350 pounds of vining crops per week

  More than 10 kilowatts of electricity per hour, per day

  Up to 2,000 gallons of clean water per day

  Communication capabilities (access to internet)

The versatility of the Helical Outpost™ opens the door to a range of opportunities like local restaurants in urban areas that want to grow their own produce; towns interested in providing students a hands-on learning experience in the core curriculum of STEM; foreign governments interested in state-of-the-art agricultural technology for their citizens; rural areas that lack local food options; among many others.  The Outpost has the potential to create a farmers market in a local community while simultaneously stabilizing a remote region of a war torn conflict zone in desperate need of basic resources thousands of miles across the globe.

POWER SYSTEM OVERVIEW

solar-panels-on-helical-outpost-side-view_600x400The Helical Outpost’s™ commercial grade solar power panels produce up to 10.8 kW’s of electricity per hour that turn the Outpost into a community back-up power station in addition to powering the Outpost’s farm, water and communications systems.

The Helical Outpost™ is also preconfigured with built in batteries to store up to 50 kW hours of electricity.

HYDROPONIC GREENHOUSE

The Helical Outpost™ includes a 2,880 square foot, commercial-grade, hydroponic greenhouse that unpacks from the intermodal container that can grow fresh produce in most climates anywhere in the world.lettuce-close-up-helical-outpost

The Helical Outpost™ can produce the equivalent of up to 3 acres of conventional soil-based growing.

Pre integrated water purification systemWATER

The Helical Outpost’s™ pre-integrated water purification system is equipped with four levels of filtration – carbon, sediment, reverse osmosis and UV. The filtration system is capable of cleaning up to 2000 gallons of contaminated water per day.

The filtration system can clean a range of toxins that include chlorine, sewage and bacteria. Specific results are based on levels of toxicity.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION OUTPUTSgrow-house_600x600

Within 6 weeks, the Helical Outpost™ will yield its first crop harvest.  After initial crop harvest, the weekly crop yields equal approximately 2300 heads of leafy greens.

Leafy greens, including spinach, lettuce, and kale, may yield approximately 2200 heads per week (all year) based on an approximate 6 or 7 week process from planting a seed to harvest.

Vining crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, may yield up to 350 pounds per week. 80%-90% less water is needed than conventional, soil-based growing.

COMMUNICATIONS

global-star-satellite-system-oupost_800Thanks to our partnership with Globalstar, the Helical Outpost™ is able to provide satellite voice and data communications on the world’s most modern mobile satellite communications network.  The Globalstar Sat-Fi™ Satellite Wi-Fi Hotspot allows 8 unique portable Wi-Fi enabled devices (phone, tablet & laptop) to seamlessly connect to the Internet and send & receive voice calls, send data and transfer files, send & receive email and even text using 100% satellite technology.

AREA REQUIREMENTS

The recommended area for a Helical Outpost™ is as little as 5,500 square feet, which includes 2,880 square feet for the greenhouse, 1,600 square feet for community access, and 1,000 square feet for the intermodal container to support the community hub.
